In 1988 on a wet day in Ayr the replacement driver waits to take over the arriving 11.05 Stranraer to London Euston train hauled by class 47 no. 629. EMU class 318 251 awaits departure in platform 2 with an Ayr to Glasgow Central service.
The large Ayr Station Hotel built by the Glasgow and South-Western Railway Company in the 19th century sits besides the station. Sadly the hotel is now closed and in the process of being demolished.

Class 156 no. 431 leaves Kilmarnock station heading south with the 13.07 Glasgow Central to Carlisle service in the summer of 1990. As the train leaves the station it passes the towers of two former churches: the West High Kirk (left) built in 1844 and the Old Kirk (right) built in 1813.
