In 1988 on a wet day in Ayr the replacement driver waits to take over the arriving 11.05 Stranraer to London Euston train hauled by class 47 no. 629. EMU class 318 251 awaits departure in platform 2 with an Ayr to Glasgow Central service.

The large Ayr Station Hotel built by the Glasgow and South-Western Railway Company in the 19th century sits besides the station. Sadly the hotel is now closed and under threat of demolition.
