Commonwealth War Graves Commission - A New Information Strategy

The Commonwealth war Graves Commission has launched a new information strategy. Its intention is to make people in the United Kingdom aware that the commission looks after 170,000 war graves in the UK and maintains memorials on which 130,00 names of the missing are listed.

The CWGC will be erecting signs at hundreds of cemeteries alerting the public that the cemetery concerned contains war graves.

In Scotland the CWGC maintains war graves at 1,200 locations.

The biggest concentration of war graves in Scotland is at the Lyness Royal Naval Cemetery on Hoy, Orkney, with almost 700 burials, while numerous graveyards contain a single casualty. [BBC Charity raises awareness of war graves in Scotland 11 November 2011]
